I Sat Down With My Child

“I Sat Down With My Child”

I sat down with my child.
I asked him what was wrong.
He looked away,
said “everything’s great”
and sang a lonely song.
I listened to his rhythm.
I hummed creative cut.
I looked at him
said “lovely, son”
but door to room was shut.
_________

I sat down with my child.
I asked about his toy.
He looked outside,
said “a brother would be nice”
and dreamed of days past Boy.
I joined his plastic battles.
I cheered his conquering feats.
I looked at him
said “lovely, son”
but more did he retreat.

_________

I sat down with my child.
I asked him questions, none.
He looked at me
said everything
though uttered not a sound.
I held him close and listened.
I felt his soul and swooned.
He looked at me
said “I love u daddy”
and safety flooded the room.
